7 Home Projects You Can Finish Before Your Sunday Scaries Kick In

7 Home Projects You Can Finish Before Your Sunday Scaries Kick In

There are two kinds of weekend home projects: the ones you think will take two hours, and the ones that actually take two hours. We’re only interested in the second kind.

As satisfying as a home project can be, nobody wants to spend their entire Sunday surrounded by drop cloths, making their third unexpected trip to the hardware store, and watching a YouTube tutorial titled “You’ve Been Doing This Wrong Your Entire Life.”

October is actually the perfect time to tackle a few small things around the house. The Central Texas weather is (hopefully) starting to cooperate, and while we’re absolutely not calling this holiday prep yet, November does have a habit of showing up approximately five minutes after Halloween.

So, let’s get a few things done now. Nothing dramatic. Nothing requiring a contractor. Just seven projects you can knock out before the Sunday scaries have a chance to find you.

1. A Little Curb Appeal Never Hurt

Your front door is basically your home’s first impression, so maybe it deserves more attention than the junk drawer. Give the whole entry a quick reset. Clean the door and trim, replace the doormat that has been through enough, add a planter, update tired house numbers, or hang a simple fall wreath. If you’re feeling ambitious, a fresh coat of paint can completely change the look of your entrance in an afternoon.

Best of all, when November and December bring more people to your doorstep, you can casually pretend it always looks this good. We won’t tell.

2. Fix The Little Things You’ve Learned to Live With

There’s the loose cabinet handle you tighten with your fingers every few weeks, the door that squeaks, the drawer that has to be lifted just right before it will close, or the light bulb that has been out so long you’ve simply accepted that one corner of the room is dark now.

Choose three of those tiny annoyances and finally fix them. Most of these jobs take only a few minutes, but because we encounter them every day, taking care of them can make your home feel surprisingly more put together.

These are also exactly the little things you suddenly become hyperaware of when people come over. Will your guests care that your pantry door squeaks? Probably not. Will you hear it from across the house every single time someone opens it? Absolutely.

3. Address The Lighting Situation

If one lamp is warm and cozy while your overhead light is giving dentist’s office vibes, we need to talk. Lighting can completely change the way a room feels, and you don’t need to replace every fixture to make a difference. Start by making sure the bulbs in each room have a consistent warmth and brightness, then look for dark corners that could use a table lamp, floor lamp, or simple under-cabinet lighting.

As the days get shorter, good lighting makes your home feel warmer and more inviting. It can also make a space look surprisingly more polished.

4. Finally Deal With That Drawer

You know the one. It contains batteries, takeout menus, mystery keys, four pairs of scissors, a tape measure, three pens that don’t work, and a charger that belongs to a device nobody in your family has owned since 2017. It’s time.

Empty the whole thing, throw away what you don’t need, group similar items together, and add a few inexpensive dividers if necessary. What should take less than an hour will somehow make you feel like you have your entire life together.

If that tiny win gives you some momentum, move on to another small trouble spot like the bathroom cabinet, coat closet, pantry, or the infamous food-container-and-lid situation. Just resist the urge to turn this into a whole-house organizational marathon.

5. Rescue One Boring Wall

You don’t have to repaint an entire room to make it feel different. Sometimes one blank or underwhelming wall is all you need to tackle.

Hang a large piece of art, add a mirror, create a small gallery wall, or install a couple of simple shelves. Before you buy anything, though, try shopping your own house. Artwork, mirrors, lamps, and decor can look completely different when they move from one room to another.

This is also a good time to get your everyday spaces feeling the way you want them before seasonal decorations start appearing. When November rolls around, you’ll have a better blank canvas to work with instead of trying to decorate around things you already didn’t love.

6. Give Your Bathroom The Hotel Treatment

No, we are not ripping out tile or installing a new vanity on a Saturday afternoon. We’re talking about the small things that make a bathroom feel cleaner, calmer, and a little more finished.

Clear the clutter off the counter, swap tired towels for fresh ones, replace an old shower curtain, add a nicer soap dispenser, and bring in a small tray or plant. While you’re at it, take a good look at the bath mat that has faithfully served your household for the last several years. It may be time to thank it for its service.

None of these changes are particularly dramatic, but together they can make a bathroom feel surprisingly refreshed. And if that bathroom happens to become the guest bathroom in a month or two, your future self is going to feel extremely smug about having already handled it.

7. Remember You Have A Patio

Good news, Central Texas: we can go outside again. After months of treating the walk from the front door to the car like an endurance event, October is a pretty great time to reclaim your outdoor space.

Sweep off the patio, wipe down the furniture, say goodbye to the plants that did not survive their battle with summer, and add a few simple touches like outdoor pillows, lanterns, or string lights.

Then actually sit out there. Have your coffee outside. Eat dinner on the patio. Invite friends over. Enjoy those magical few weeks when Texas remembers that temperatures in the 70s exist. You’ve earned this.

One Important Rule: Don’t Turn It Into A Whole Thing

Home projects escalate quickly. You start organizing one kitchen cabinet. Suddenly you’re researching backsplash tile and wondering if you should knock down a wall. Step away from Pinterest.

Choose one or two projects you can realistically finish in a weekend, do them, and enjoy the little dopamine hit that comes from finally crossing them off your list. Making your home feel better doesn’t always require a contractor, a renovation budget, or three consecutive weekends.

For now? Fix the drawer. Then go enjoy the rest of your Sunday.

Love Your Home Or Ready For a Different One?

Sometimes fixing the lighting, refreshing the patio, or finally dealing with that weird wall is enough to make your home feel brand new again. And sometimes you finish all seven projects and realize the problem was never the bath mat.

If you’re starting to wonder whether your home still fits the way you live or you’re simply curious about what else is out there Holly Loff can help you explore your options in the Central Texas real estate market without making it a whole thing.

No pressure. No moving boxes required. Just a conversation about what home could look like next.
