How To Make Your Home Feel Like Fall When It’s Still 90° Outside

How To Make Your Home Feel Like Fall When It’s Still 90° Outside

Fall in Central Texas is a little…complicated. The calendar says September. Pumpkin spice has made its annual comeback. Every store is suddenly selling chunky sweaters, fuzzy blankets, and enough Halloween decor to haunt an entire subdivision.

Meanwhile, Texas is like: “Cute. Anyway, here’s 94°.”

So while we may not be pulling on our favorite sweater or opening the windows just yet, we can still bring a little fall magic home. The secret? Decorate for the idea of fall, not necessarily the temperature.

Here’s how to make your home feel cozy, seasonal, and just a little bit autumnal, without turning your house into a 90-degree cinnamon-scented oven.

First Things First: Put Away The Summer Vibes

We’re not saying you need to pack up every piece of summer decor. But if your house is still screaming “pool day!”, it might be time for a little seasonal handoff.

Swap out a few of those bright, summery accents for warmer tones like:

  • Rust, terracotta, burnt orange, and deep burgundy
  • Olive and sage green
  • Warm cream, camel, and tan

Think throw pillows, kitchen towels, artwork, blankets, or a simple centerpiece.

You don’t need a $2,000 Target run. A few little swaps can make your home feel completely different.

Add Cozy Textures…Without Actually Getting Cozy

Here’s the Texas fall decorating challenge: We want cozy. We do not want sweaty. Luckily, texture can do most of the heavy lifting.

Bring out the chunky knit throw. Add a few boucle or velvet pillows. Toss a woven basket into the corner. Layer in natural wood or other warm textures.

Your home will look like you are ready for a crisp fall evening and your thermostat can continue doing what it needs to do. Everybody wins.

Give Your Greenery a Fall Glow-Up

Your plants don’t have to know what month it is. Add a few seasonal touches around them instead: dried eucalyptus, wheat stems, branches, pampas grass, or fall florals.

Faux is absolutely allowed here. In fact, faux foliage has one major advantage: It has never once asked you to remember to water it.

And don’t forget the front porch. A seasonal wreath, a few pumpkins, potted mums, or a fall-colored doormat can make your entryway feel instantly more festive.

Make Your House Smell Like Fall

If Texas won’t give you crisp fall air, your candle can pick up the slack. Bring in seasonal scents like apple, cinnamon, vanilla, cedar, amber, or pumpkin.

But please remember: one pumpkin candle is cozy. Twelve pumpkin candles is a cry for help. A subtle seasonal scent is all you need to make the house feel a little more “fall.”

Take The Fall Party Outside

This is where Central Texas gets the last laugh. While plenty of other states are already putting away their patio furniture, fall can be prime outdoor season here.

When the temperatures finally cooperate, give your backyard or patio a little attention:

  • Add outdoor pillows in warm fall colors
  • Hang string lights
  • Bring out the lanterns
  • Freshen up the seating
  • Break out the fire pit when the weather allows

Because honestly, what’s more Central Texas than enjoying a beautiful fall evening outside… and then checking the weather app every 11 minutes to see if it’s finally cool enough?

Pumpkins Are Allowed. Pumpkin Everything Is Not.

We love pumpkins.

A few pumpkins on the porch? Adorable.
A pumpkin on every shelf, counter, table, bathroom sink, and windowsill? Maybe we’ve gone too far.

Try mixing pumpkins with wood accents, greenery, woven textures, candles, and other natural elements. It keeps your decor feeling seasonal without looking like you moved into the Halloween section of a craft store.

Create a Fall Mood, Not a Fall Museum

You don’t need your home to look like a magazine spread. You need it to feel like somewhere you want to be. Put on your favorite fall playlist. Light the candle. Make the coffee. Invite some friends over. Sit outside when the weather cooperates.

Maybe you’ll even get one of those magical evenings where the temperature drops enough that you can open the windows.

When that happens, don’t ask questions. Just open them.

The Official Central Texas Fall Starter Pack

If you’re looking for the TL;DR (too long; didn’t read) version, here you go:

🍂 Warm colors
🎃 A few pumpkins
🕯️ One really good candle
🧺 Cozy textures
🌿 A little seasonal greenery
✨ Outdoor lights
☕ Your favorite fall drink
❄️ A fully functional air conditioner

Because that’s the thing about fall in Central Texas. It doesn’t have to look exactly like the fall you see in movies. There may not be a crisp breeze blowing through the trees. The leaves may not be changing yet. And you might still be wearing shorts while putting out your pumpkins.

That’s okay.

Fall is a feeling — and you can absolutely create that feeling at home. So go ahead. Put out the pumpkins. Light the candle. Make the fall drink.

Just leave the chunky sweater in the closet for now. Texas isn’t ready.
